Ernakulam

Ernakulam is a district of the state of Kerala. The district headquarters are at Kakkanad. The district includes the city of Kochi, an important seaport.

Geography

The District which has an area of 895 km˛ can be divided geographically into highland, midland and coastal area. The altitude of the highland is about 300 m. The borders of the district are the Arabian Sea in the west, Thrissur District in the north, Idukki District in the east, and Alappuzha and Kottayam districts in the south. The Periyar River, Kerala's second longest, flows through all the taluks except Muvattupuzha. The Muvattupuzha River and a branch of Chalakkudy River also flow through the district. The district has a moderate climate, and mostly falls within the Malabar Coast moist forests ecoregion, while the highlands are part of the South Western Ghats moist deciduous forests ecoregion. Many types of sands, soil and also rocks which are geological importance is abundant here.

Climate

Cochin is a seaside town just 10 degrees north of the equator. Hence, it is a moderately hot and humid place round the year. Heavy showers with thunder and lightning are experienced between June-September due to the south-west monsoon. The north-west monsoon brings light rainfall during October-December. Cochin International Airport is one of the country's youngest Airports with modern facilities and conveniences.Located at Nedumbassery, which is about 30 kms off Kochi (Cochin) city,this is the first airport in India that was constructed with private participation ,outside the ambit of Airport Authority of India. Government of Kerala, Non-Resident Indians from over 30 countries, Travelling Public, Financial Institutions, Airport service providers and others are the major stake holders.
Currently, more than 70 flights operate in and out of this Airport daily connecting all major cities across India and International destinations like Dubai, Sharjah, Chicago, Colombo, Singapore and more.
The Airport is situated off National Highway- 47 (NH-47) at Athany and NH-17 at Angamaly. The Nearest Railway Station at Angamaly is about 8 kms away.Soon the Airport-Seaport express Road will connect the Airportm with Cochin Port at Vallarpadom, making for easier and faster movements of container and other cargo.
Ernakulam is connected to all cities in India by railroad.
There are two main stations, Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town also known as North station along with additional train stations in Cochin terminal, Aluva and Tripunithura. Ernakulam Town junction is prominent and most of the trains pass through this station. Kochi is connected by good roads with various centers of south India by national highways and linked to all towns in Kerala.
The central bus station is situated in the heart of Ernakulam city and is very close to the Ernakulam Junction railway station. Long route private buses operate from High Court Jn., Railway Station and Kaloor Junction.
The main Ferry Station (Boat Jetty) is located 1 km. from Junction railway station and has services to the following places. The ferry to Bolgatty island operates from the jetty near the High Court

The Hill Palace , the official residence of the Kochi royal family, is today the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. Built in 1865, the Palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style of Kerala, sprawled over 52 acres of beautifully landscaped terraced land which houses a deer park and facilities for horse riding.
